Time: 7.00pm – 9.00pm

An enlightening evening with local author, Natalie Kayley, 7.00-9.00pm on Thursday 27th January

Description

We are very excited to host local author Natalie Kayley to discuss her debut novel, Where The Planes Flew Over. All of the stories are based in Hampshire: Southampton, Winchester, Itchen Abbas and a village called Longwood.

After recording a series of memories on a cheap, old dictaphone of her grandparents, great auntie and a neighbour, Natalie then spent the last few years writing the first book out of what will be a 3-book series. This first book focuses on the first two years of the war.

As only two of the five people are still alive now, it really does mean the world to get their stories heard.

”Five Children in the heart of Hampshire have their own stories to tell about growing up in a world of war: from nights of terror in the Southampton Blitz, to housing evacuees, to their own family trials and tribulations – But most of all, on how the Second World War transformed them into the people they’ve become and how it taught them to open their hearts a little bit more…”

Natalie and the team at P&G Wells look forward to welcoming you to this free talk, followed by a Q&A and book signing.

    A Nun and the Pig

The heartwarming story of a year spent in a forgotten corner of apartheid South Africa, where humour and kindness flourished amid grinding poverty and brutal racism. Funny and shocking in equal measure, this tale of a British teenager far from home – and his unlikely friendship with a local nun – is one of adventure, ambition and hope.

Frances Jellico is dying. A man who calls himself the vicar visits, hoping to extract a deathbed confession. He wants to know what really happened that fateful summer of 1969, when Frances – tasked with surveying a dilapidated country house – first set eyes on the glamorous bohemian couple, Cara and Peter. She recalls the relationship they forged through sweltering days, lavish dinners, and elaborate lies, and the Judas hole through which she would spy on the couple. Were the signs there right from the beginning? Or was it impossible to avoid the crime that split their lives open like rotten fruit?

    Cnut

Cnut, or Canute, was King of England for nearly 20 years, dying in Dorset in 1035. A formidable figure, Cnut is one of the great ‘what ifs’ in English history. The culmination of a long period of Viking attacks and settlement across England, Cnut’s reign could have permanently shifted 11th century England’s orbit to Scandinavia. Stretching his authority across the North Sea to become king of Denmark and Norway, and with close links to Ireland and an overlordship of Scotland, Cnut created a Viking Empire at least as plausible as the Anglo-Norman Empire that would emerge in 1066. Ryan Lavelle’s book explores this fascinating and powerful man. He has popularly come down to us for the story of Canute and the waves – but he was a nation and empire builder on the grandest scale and his reign is a sort of masterclass in the contingent, wayward nature of history.

    Coma

In May 2013 Zara Slattery’s persistent sore throat turned into a deadly bacterial infection, after the paracetamol and ice pack prescribed by her GP failed to work. The world of Zara’s 15-day drug-induced coma, which she describes as ‘being trapped in a nightmare state that you can’t wake up from’ is rendered as a full-colour fantasy, with mythological creatures appearing out of nowhere as she battles to protect her three children against the forces of evil that threaten to engulf her. Meanwhile, her husband Dan tries to keep family life going as he faces the most difficult task of all: preparing the children for the likely loss of their mother.
